As we honor Women’s History Month, I can’t help but reflect on the profound impact my mother has had on shaping the woman I am today. Growing up as her only child after my parents’ divorce, I witnessed her resilience, strength, and unwavering determination as a single mother and a dedicated educator. Her wisdom continues to guide me.
One of the most defining aspects of my upbringing is the invaluable lessons she imparted to me, shaping my perspective and empowering me to embrace my identity as a “women’s woman.” My mother broke the mold, teaching me that self-reliance and self-belief are fundamental to success and happiness and that ambition was not a bad word.
I often find myself recollecting the affirmations she taught. They echo in my mind and fuel my drive to break barriers and defy expectations:
- “Never depend on anyone else until you can depend on yourself first.” This mantra reminded me of the importance of self-sufficiency and resilience.
- “You are so smart. You can do anything. And you especially can do anything a man can do.” My mother’s unwavering belief in my abilities encouraged me to pursue my passions fearlessly.
- “Always run for office and volunteer in leadership roles. The world needs girls to make the rules and run the meetings.” Her advocacy for female leadership and representation has inspired me to take on leadership roles and contribute to my school as a child and my community as an adult.
As we celebrate Women’s History Month, let us imagine a world where every girl is empowered with positive affirmations and support. Together, we can continue to uplift and inspire the women of tomorrow, creating a more inclusive and equitable world for all.
