Celebrating 40 Years of Life and Lessons Learned

Today I turn 40. Am I upset? No. Am I scared? Absolutely not. Am I excited? You bet!!

I have unapologetically been celebrating this milestone birthday all week! It’s been filled with happy hours, dinners, thoughtful gifts, and even a surprise intimate party orchestrated by my husband and dear friends (complete with smokey jalapeno margaritas, Chuy’s fajitas, a collaborative craft, and a fabulous game of Davonna-charades…I was speechless and shocked and felt so very special.) I’ve chosen to wake up at my childhood home in Flatwoods, KY, today with my mom by my side. I can’t help but feel immense gratitude for the love and celebration that has surrounded me.

Entering my 40s, I’m in a position, personally and professionally, where I’m following my bliss and living out my life’s purpose. This week of celebration has been a testament to that, and I’m truly grateful for the love and support I’ve received.

As I embark on this new chapter, I reflect on the lessons learned in my 30s that have shaped me and will guide me into my 40s:

  1. Embrace Vulnerabilities: In embracing and living out my vulnerabilities, I’ve learned that feeling shame is inevitable. Talking about it and choosing courage over comfort always leads to growth.
  2. Own My Story: Despite facing challenges in the past decade, I’ve come to realize that my story, both the triumphs and tribulations, is a part of me. Sharing my experiences can potentially help others navigate similar struggles.
  3. Trust and Care for Myself: Despite constantly reminding others of their strength, I’ve learned to trust my abilities and also prioritize self-care. Loving and nurturing oneself not always easy, especially as a woman, but it is essential to caring for others.
  4. Nurture Relationships: Quality over quantity is the mantra when it comes to relationships. While I cherish a broad network of friends, it’s the special few in my horseshoe who have been unwavering in their support, reminding me of my light even in dark times, that I hold closest to my heart.

So here’s to 40! If I die tomorrow, I can say with certainty that I’ve lived a fulfilling life, and my heart is overflowing with gratitude. Whether you’re a dear friend or have simply signed up for some sparkle in your inbox, I appreciate you from the bottom of my heart for being on this incredible journey called life with me.

Cheers to the adventures that lie ahead!
